Firewire problem on Compaq EVO N400C notebook

I just received my Firewire PCMCIA card from Compgeeks today. I plugged it into my EVO N400C notebook and the card was detected and installed w/o a hitched. I hooked up my Sony digital camcorder and was able to capture video from the camcorder. I thought everything was good, but apparently not.

I tried safely removing the card by through the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the system tray. I am running WinXP Pro by the way. Anyway, the "Safely Remove Hardware" window appeared and I could choose to remove my firewire card. The problem, however, is that the system doesn't remove. The SRH window just sat there and when I moved my mouse cursor anywhere around the SRH window, it would appear as the hour-glass icon. I could start other applications, but I just couldn't remove the firewire card. And when I tried to restart my system after that, the computer wouldn't shut down.

I believe because of the above problem, I couldn't put my laptop in stand-by mode either. I would see the "Please wait while windows is switching to standby mode" window, but the computer wouldn't go into stand-by mode as well.

So far, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the firewire card driver, but it didn't help. I also called Compaq Tech support but was told they couldn't do anything since there is no other occurence of a similar problem in their database. Any help would be much appreciated.

I wonder if you can just hot unplug. Dunno for sure but you could try.

Unplugging it doesn't crash my computer or anything, but it definitely doesn't let me reboot properly. Had to power it off and on instead.
