My brother just bought a laptop and it has a firewire port on the back of it. If I went out and bouth a external firewire drive, and hooked one end of a firewire up to my port, and the other end to his, would we be able to play games over it? Or do we need a router/switch?

You *can* do networking over Firewire, but not through an external drive. If both computers have ethernet ports, I would recommend getting a cheap crossover cable and networking that way - no hub/switch required. :)

We tried hooking a crossover cable into our computers, and my connection to his looked ok, but his connection said it had limited to no connectivity, and we cant share any files. What else do we have to do?

change the IP addresses so they can see each other, 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 would work. Then to hshare files you need to make sure they are in the same workgroup, I think the default its MSHOME but im not 100%, and file sharing needs to be turned on.

You don't need a drive. You just need a Firewire cable.
