firewire networking

I have 2 comps hooked up with firewire. They also have wireless access to internet gateway but that shouldn't affect this. The firewire link works fine most of the time, but sometimes after being afk a while they get the error message "a network cable is unplugged". Unplugging and replugging the FW cable fixes it. I don't see any power saving options on the FW controller, but is there something buried I am missing or some option I dont know about? Only been doing the FW link for about a week now.

Are the cables within the 15 foot limit?

Measure how long it takes for the link to be dropped. It may be a timeout of some sort. If the time is random though, then it's something else. (Make sure there's no traffic passing between them while timing it, since that could reset the timer.)
