I'm trying to connect my laptop to my desktop using FireWire cable but I'm having problems transfering large files. The laptop has XPHome, my desktop XPPro, I ran Network Setup Wizard on both. I can acccess both PCs directories okay & even transfer a few small files. But when I try large files(ie >50mb) the FW network just disables itself on both PCs, to get it up again I must disconnect/reconnect FW cable. This also happens when I try to connect my laptop to other XP PCs.

Anyone successfully connect 2 PCs using FW...any ideas about my problem? What settings am I missing here, Micro$oft says this should work? TIA

You might try turning off or changing settings in APM or ACPI. Sometimes the power management can interfer with things.

Thanx for that info...I tried uninstalling NetBEIU, but same problems. Not sure bout APM, but disabling ACPI in XP could be hazardious & require a OS reinstall. FW works fine with my ext HDD, tho maybe I should try different cable. I also bought a USB 2.0 file transfer cable($14) so I may go that route...

I do believe it's chipset related, I tried a different USB2/FW card in my desktop & it worked just fine! That card had a VIA chipset controlling FW, the first card had a NEC, so it goes...everything else worked in both cards, ie USB 2.0, etc. :D
