Firewire Hard Drive - Not Detected!

I just connected my new Iomega 120Gb Firewire hard-drive to my laptop and it is not being detected at all. I know it is not the drive itself as it works on my dad's Mac - the only difference being that I have to use a 6-pin to 4-pin converter to connect it to my machine. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions as to why Windows XP Pro isn't detecting it?

Thanks!

This firewire hardrive... Does it draw power from a external power soruce?

6-pin FireWire carries power to devices. 4-pin FireWire does not.

If your device doesn't need a external power supply then it must draw power from the FireWire bus, however when using a 6 to 4 pin adapter power is no longer delivered to the device so it doesn't work.

it has an external power source.

have you used other firewire devices on that laptop?

in device manager, does the firewire port show up? yellow exclamation point? is that port enable in the bios?

is there an updated bios/driver for your laptop from toshiba?

It has external power and I think it is FAT32 formatted - I have not tried any other firewire devices on the laptop, but I have tried the HDD on another laptop with a 4-pin port and it wasn't recognised on that machine either. This leads me to believe that the adapter is faulty... I'll also look for an updated driver from Toshiba, just in case.

Thanks guys!!

You may need to go into disk management in XP and enable it. If nothing else you could go in there and see if it even sees it.
