Firewire DVD drive prevents booting

I have an external DVD writer(I don't use it much, so it spends much of its time in the closet) that recently started preventing my computer from booting.

When I have it hooked up and powered when I switch on the computer, Windows XP SP2 loads to the black screen with the blue dotted bar that goes back and force, then just blank screen.

If I wait until the OS is loaded, then I turn on the drive, I'm fine. I didn't have this problem a few months ago. I tried uninstalling,t hen reinstalling firewire card driver to no help.

Any clue?

What is your operating system booting from? If it is a SATA drive certain MB will try to boot from any other possible source before it boots from the SATA or SCSI drive. Also check to see if your motherboard supports booting from fire wire or USB. If this is not your booting device than disable the boot feature. I had the same problem with my A7n8x MB and a USB drive with a bootable partition
Also SP2 could have made some changes and the drive doesn't support the change. Check with the maker to see if any SP@ issues
