I am a technology teacher in a HS that has been taken over by the state due to fiscal emergency(votes haven't approved a tax levy for 10years). At some point before I came 3 years ago someone bought or donated a Que firewire CD burner. Nice unit but useless since there is no firewire adapters on any computer in any building. Yes, we could buy firewire card adapters but (see above-no money) This burner would be perfect for teachers to borrow to burn CD's of theirs or students projects etc except for the connectivity problem. I've looked around but there doesn't seem to be a good solution. I found a product Dllink makes but it seems to be an external hub that has both USB and 1394 ports. I need a devise that will:
Work with XP and Win98
Connect to USB
Connect to a Firewire
Portable
Cheap.

If you don't mind doing a little assembly you could buy an external enclosure like this Bytecc. Then you simply insert the CD (~$30) or DVD (~$60) burner of your choice.

You may even be able to remove the burner out of the Que you have and use that in new enclosure (chances are it's a standard 5.25" IDE drive).

WinXP should have no issue working with an external drive. For Win98 you'll need to install drivers which are usually included on a CD with the external enclosure.
