Did you install the drivers yet? I have something (I what card it was) that won't even get recognized until you install the drivers and reboot. What does the manual say about it?

I had the same problem with a Lucent chipset card. Didn't matter which slot. It was simply invisible.

Finally bought a VIA chipset card and it worked right away.

Neither came with drivers, and I installed no drivers for either.

By the way, was it a 1394a (not just 1394) compliant card and is it OHCI 1.1 compliant?

I got one of these scanners but I plugged it in to an existing firewire card (Pinnacle). I had issues with the scanner drivers but it was my fault for not following the instructions. Anyhow, all fixed now. Do you have anything (yellow exclamation) in device manager?

Edit: This Pinnacle Studio DV is a TI card also.
Edit 2: Doh just re-read your post about nothing device manager, sorry my bad.
What other cards are you using? Are you sure it is not seeing the controller or just not the scanner?

Ok.. New problem!

When XP tries to install the driver automatically for it, the computer freezes every time! I have searched TI.com for a driver (as its a Texas Instrument 1394 Firewire card) to no avail for drivers. My only hope is to install the driver before installing the card, so that it doesn't find the driver that keeps freezing the system.. If anyone knows where to get this driver, LMK plz! Or if you have any other ideas =)

thnx

The driver is built into XP. You should not need another driver. I also have a 1394 card with the TI chipset. All I did was plug it in and turn on the computer. XP detected it and installed the drivers for it automatically.

Yes, for me XP installed them automatically.
In my device manager under the heading "IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers" I have "Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller"

All Firewire drivers are built in to XP. There are four of them used for the controller. The device (scanner) would come later and have its own as well. I have Firewire in three systems including my laptop with XP Pro. It was pure PnP . . . XP did it all. Sometimes it does make a difference which PCI slot the card is in . . . that also depends on the mobo . . . i.e., which slots are in cahoots for sharing.

Thnx guys. But again, Im not stupid =) I know that they are built in, but I had to delete them, because for some reason they were not working. What I need now is someone who has them working, to send them to me =) sxmp4@attbi.com thnx!

Actually, sorry about the lack of updates, but...

I have it working! Perfectly! Its an amazing scanner, everything that was said about it is true. The speed, the quality, the lack of UMAX Tech Support =) But otherwise its great. I love it and I did finally get it to work, (with a fresh install of Win XP). Also, UMAX has the correct drivers for the scanner on their website now for WinXP. If you need any help, I can surely let you know the steps I took to get the scanner working flawlessly. (I now know the way to get it to work even without a fresh install..)
