Firewire Card and Drivers

I have an HP slimline machine running Windows 7.
My video camera ia a Sony Digital Handicam.
Sony stopped creating drivers for any operating system past XP.
If I install a firewire card will this negate the driver problem and let the camera talk to the computer, or is it a lost cause?

Late reply, but AFAIK, FireWire drivers are preinstalled in every modern Windows OS... so it should work out of the box...

Windows 7 comes with a legacy 1394 driver - that should work.

Over the years I've had multiple Firewire devices, Sony and multiple Epson scanners and never got it to work right. It would work here and there, but tons of crashes

That is a common comment - keep in mind that 1394 is a power hog compared to USB. Many of the problems are power related.

There seemed to be tons of problems with TWAIN plug-in support and everyone abandoned support now. Been a while but think I used that a lot.
