Firewire can't run under Win XP, please help...

Hi, I just bought this CompUSA firewire. I successfully ran it under Win 98 and Win 2000 Pro but I couldn't get it to work under Win XP. The card itself has no driver. Windows has the driver for it. The error message that I get is "Device cannot start (Code 10)". The card is using the lucent phy chipset. Can somebody help me out.

TIA

That's odd.

At the very least, Windows will load up the generic OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller device drivers. See if you can manually find the drivers for that in the driver list.

Andy, yes, it loads the generic driver but I also see the exclamation mark under the network card. I have no clue why it's giving that exclamation mark as this one is a firewire/usb combo card. it detects the usb just fine. it acually detects the firewire and had the OHCI also. the only problem that I see like I said is the exclamation mark under the network card.

edit: Andy, when you said find the driver in the device list, where do I look at that? thanks

Try rebooting with your camcorder on. I get the same error every now and then in w2k, and this takes care of it. Not the perfect fix, but it worked for me.

hi, thanks for the answer but what is weird is it works fine under WIn 2k and Win 98 without a hitch. So when you have your camcorder on, it fix the problem by itself and when the camcorder is off it gives you the error again? thanks

No, it will stay good until I reboot with the cam off, then I get the error again. I rarely reboot, so it's never been a big deal to me.

hi, thanks once again. just want to make sure that the error that you see is exactly under the network card properties? and also the error is "Device cannot start (Code 10)"? What kind of os do you use? Thanks

<< Maybe this will help, my buddy was RC90 and his scanner was a firewire type, he had the same errors..maybe the same fix will work?
Good luck!

thanks.... apparently it's the issue with Win XP. Win XP supports the new feature that allows firewire card to work as network card but I think it's not perfect yet so that's why the error is still there. Now I know that there's nothing wrong with my card. Thanks once again for the link. I really appreciate it.

I bought the exact same card (because it was on sale at CompUSA for only $19.88) and have the same problem in WinXP! I get an entry under Firewire and USB OHCI controllers but an exclamation mark under Firewire Net adapter.

I'm hoping that WinXP is trying to set up the Firewire card for networking purposes but that this card isn't set up for that -- but that the other stuff (Digital video capture, Firewire harddrives and CDROMs) will still work okay.

Unfortunately, I don't have any firewire peripherals to test it. Tonight, I'm gonna plug in my USB joystick and see if that works.

Actually XP has the feature that enable firewire to be used like a network card. it's peer to peer but what I don't know is why it's giving the exclamation mark. I am gonna buy another card and try to hook up both systems to see if that will solve it. I think it's a bug in XP that gives the exclamation mark.

Well.. for me I just get a hard lock at bootup as soon as XP recognizes the card.

This really sucks.

Anyone found updated driver or whatever to help this problem.
I hate to think that I will have to have my DVcamcorder hooked up to my computer ... just to get it to boot.

Anyone with solution please post.
Thanks.
