How does one determine which type of firewire cable one needs? There is the 4/6 and a 6/6. My new Audigy Platinum came with a firewire port and I want to pick up a cable. Right now the only thing I have that uses firewire is a MiniDVcam.
TIA

Hi,

Powered devices require 6-6 (the extra two pins are for powering devices). Laptops generally have 4 pin O/P due to the fact that it's smaller and not using the battery to power an external device extends battery life (iLink on Sony for example).

Some external devices with their own DC power still use 6 pins! (Yamaha FX1 CD curner for example).

So, you can see it really depends on what O/P you have to hand and what exactly you're connecting to. There are no hard and fast rules.

Good luck,

Andy

Thanks. I was hoping for "one size fits all" but that would be too easy. :)

I know the Audigy has unpowered Firewire ports, so I would assume it would use the 4/4 cable? Seeing how it provides no power to devices (the audigy that is) But then again what do I know about Firewire?

hehe
