Firewire AND USB2.0 media reader?

Since this hooks up to your computer I figure it's a general hardware question. If it needs to be elsewhere, I'd appreciate if a mod can move/delete it.

Anyway, I've ordered myself a Canon Powershot G3 camera... waiting on its delivery. Also ordered a 256mb CF card for it so I won't be restricted by the 32mb one it comes with... but on to the point...
I want to get an external media reader for it, and would like to get one that will hook up via USB2.0 AND IEEE 1394. This is mainly because I'd be transferring the pictures between 2 separate computers... a laptop and a desktop. The laptop has firewire but not USB2.0, and the desktop has USB2.0 but not firewire. I know I could get a USB2.0 and just sacrifice the speed while on the laptop, but would prefer not to if possible.

Does anyone know of any such thing? If there's a multi-format reader, that'd be even better cause a friend of mine has a Sony DSC-F717 and will be using Memory Stick format and would like to get one himself.

solid state memory is slow. you wont get anything fast with it. firewire readers do exist (most ppl dont know they do), and so do "usb 2" readers. however, they are not "high speed" usb, which can exceed the 1.1's 12Mbps, or if they do, it's insignificant.

i recommend you just get a regular 1.1 reader. if you go usb2.0 or firewire, you'll save a second or 2 if you transfer 256MB. it's not "worth" it.

you can find external usb "6 in 1" readers cheap online, maybe $20 to $30.

Hmm, interesting point.
How fast (like KB/sec or MB/sec) transfer speeds are acheived with normal USB1.1 readers though? I'd think that although they ARE indeed solid state memory that they'd still be able to benefit with a faster pipe....

If there is, indeed, no real difference, I've found a SmartDisk 6in1 reader I may get that's $9.99
