Firewire Adaptor or Cable Needed

I bought this Firewire/USB PCI card so I could use the front Firewire port on my PC case (i.e., my mobo does NOT have on-board firewire); however, the connector wire coming from the PC case port is the standard (female socket) 7 or 8 pin socket (don't have it in front of me to count the pin holes in the fitting) and the above PCI card has the female firewire socket and NOT the male 7-8 pin connector I've seen on most motherboards. This PCI card also has a female USB port on-board.

How can I connect my PC firewire port on the case front to this Firewire PCI card? If I've got to spend $15 on a lousy cable, I guess I just threw my money away on this lousy firewire card.

Thanks in advance.

Bud

Looks like you need something to go between the two female 1394 6 pin connectors. (FW 400 is either 6 pin or 4 pin.) You can get a short 6 pin M to 5 pin M for very little dinero.

FW6

It is confusing the figure what connectors you are specifically talking about. Mobo FW connections are usually made to headers. Some PCI and PC Express cards have both headers and standard F 6 pin receptables. A picture or PCI card spec would help.

Gottcha. Although you can't see the "opening" of the port, the photo shows the "standard" female firewire connection on the left of the card and a standard USB connection on the back side of the card. The visible firewire and USB ports on the photo are the same as the ports on the left and back side of the card.

I'm not quite sure why anyone would need this type of firewire or USB port on the "inside" of a PC case?

Probably that can accommodate an internal FW drive with a direct 6-pin to 6-pin (male/male) cable.

What is the odd ball is the connector from your front case FW port. Is that a standard female 6 pin connector? If so, you need a gender changer ar a short cable M/M.

His case doesn't have an odd connector. Its what you generally have on the motherboard headers.

Look at this page:

http://www.pcimicro.com/.sc/ms...2F%20Adapter--Firewire

You may need to call them to see which connectors are on the adapaters
as to which has Male / Male .. Female / Female ... or Male / Female .. and you
need to know how many pins on the Firewire Card connector and on your
cable from the front panel jack. It would have been easier if you had posted
the Make / Model of the card you bought and also that of the Case you have.

Adapter

Hey guys...thanks for all the help. This cable looks like it would do the trick. The "loose" wires on the 1 end would go into the female connector on my PC case FW cable and the "standard" firewire end would go into the connector on this POS PCI card I bought. I should have know the cable which came with the PCI card would not be what I expected.

With PCs...the infinite combination of "cables" and "connectors" makes PC building a pain in the arse a LOT of times. You have to do tons of research or end up with lots of "extra" parts lying around. My cheap firewire adaptor goes from $11 shipped to $21 shipped (including the extra cost for this cable) which is almost the difference between a basic mobo with no on-board FW and a more advanced mobo with on-board FW.

Oh well...thanks again for the assistance:)
