Firewire 1394b and DVD burner and compatibility

I am thinking of getting an extenal DVD burner. I was wondering:

1. Should I get a DVD External drive or buy an enclosure and an internal DVD drive.
2. Should I get a 1394b adapter or is the performance between 1394a and 1394b about the same for a DVD burner (The burner could be a bottleneck for example).
3. If I get a 1394b DVD burner, will it work on 1394a machines (since 1394b is still pretty rare).
4. Recommendation for a 1394 adaptor for PCI and PCCard. Which brand should I avoid?

1. In general, I'd go for an enclosure since you'll get freedom of choice and it tends to be cheaper
2. FireWire 1394a, USB2.0 already provide much more than enough bandwidth for an optical drive
3. It should. 1394b has backward compatibility to 1394a.
