firewalls

how neccasary is a firewall if i have a cable modem shared over 3 computers on a wireless network? how hard is it to setup? how much configuration does it require? any tips? thanks.

for me, not really necessary at all for that kind of situation, unless of course you do sumthin silly like enable file sharing over the net. However, it's just like installing any program, most good ones will walk you through the installation, and there's nothing really to set - it will ask if you want to a)allow all ports, and then close the ones you dont use, or b)allow no ports, and open the ones u use. after that, any additional config is up to you. so, it's about 10 minutes work if you go for it - if it will make you feel better, then why not 🙂

If it was unnecessary for you you wouldnt have asked this question. Everyone on the net should have one installed and configured 🙂 Get zone alarm, it will not ask you any tough questions.

aberant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :Q :Q :Q

AND YOU!!! The one with the purdy colors!!! 😛

You better get your a$$$ in gear and get them machines behind a GOOD firewall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

😛

You may wake up one day and find the SETI@Home worm on your machine competing with your GUI! 😛

I am sure aberant has a GOOD IDS system (like snort properly configured for cheap bastards, dragon for the rich ones) that will detect these situations. He probably also has a backup of data, and is used to reinstalling. Thats what some .gov's do anyhow 😛

well i plan to share files and printers over the network at home. another quick question. how does the whole ip thing work? i dont want to pay extra for ip's especially because i dont need ip's for each computer, but i hear that they charge you extra. how do i share the internet connection without getting multiple ip's?

Setup either a router (hardware from linksys or other companies) with NAT capabilities, or setup a NAT/firewall machine, or switch cables really quickly. My personal choice is running an old computer with OpenBSD+IPF acting as a NAT/firewall.

And that's why you need a decent firewall. When you turn File & Print sharing on, that opens your machines up to insanity. :frown:

I have 14 machines, with 2 having "real IPs" and the others behind a dedicated firewall. You would configure "NAT" or "Network Address Translation", where all your machines funnel through a firewall/NAT box (whether it is a cable router/hub or a PC with NAT software on it), and that box has the "real IP". Your other machines will be "masqed" (ie.,masqueraded) by that NAT machine, having fake or "private IPs", but can still communicate out on the net. The software or firmware knows which machine the data is really for and will do the work for you.

There are a bunch of different solutions out there for you to install and/or buy to do this. 🙂

<< wha? i plan on setting up a wireless network. i dont know how what you just said applies to that. >>

both solutions I mentioned will work. There are hardware routers that have wireless connectivity built in. Just remember, neighbors could easily get around the firewall by just connecting to your wireless lan 🙂

Oh dear.... 🙁

We need to get you reading up on networking and security. 🙁 🙁 🙁

Being "wireless" is irrelevant sweetheart. 🙁

Your cable modem isn't wireless.... unless this is something new.

And those wireless solutions aren't cheap at all. The NICs alone are ~US$170.

If you connect to the internet, you NEED a firewall. Pure and simple. And if you want to use only a single "real IP", then you NEED NAT.

The best way to go out and hack with less chance of getting caught is to drive around with wireless network card in your notebook and attatch to a wireless network when you get a signal 😉

<< I hear the "Airports" installed in airports are pretty free for all... 😛 >>

In any High Tech area there will be plenty of signals to catch. There is a deli near work where a company's signal is quite strong 😉
