Firewalls are making news!
"Computer security specialist Jack Stanfield (HARRISON FORD) works for the Seattle-based Landrock Pacific Bank. A trusted top-ranking executive, he has built his career and reputation on designing the most effective anti-theft computer systems in the industry, protecting the bank?s financial holdings from the constant threat of increasingly sophisticated internet hackers with his complex network of tracers, access codes and firewalls."

Don't forget the one where he was blamed for his wife's murder.

I sure wouldn't want to play the part of one of his family members in a movie.

You could be right. It was late at night...my judgement could have been affected. But I thought that "Firewall" had some sick relevance to a Networking Forum. :)

This Network Forum is one of the busiest, and probably the most Civil Network Forum on the Internet. So, I think, it can take once in a while an Off Topic Topic.:thumbsup::beer:

anybody always laugh when you hear or see networking/hacking in the movies?

"hmm, maybe if I try this password the magic computer will speak to me and say 'access granted' instead of the big red 'access denied' message"

"I rerouted around the firewall"
Dummy, there is no other route around the firewall, otherwise it wouldn't be a firewall. sheesh.

I like it when somebody gets an email message. And the message is composed of HUGE characters. Three words fill the entire screen.

This wouldn't have happened if they'd used ISA 2004. ;)

That's what the people that pay for them would like to think. You'd be surprised at how many companies have a firewalls AND unsecured wireless access points or desktops and/or servers independently connected to external networks.

It's actually a plausible excuse for hacking, although as with most hollywood concepts is provided in a nice neat and shiny package.

Regarding the movie:
I asked the studio to hire Redford to portray me. But I had to settle for Harrison Ford. At least they didn't choose Woody Allen. :p

So true! they use all the right words but in completely the wrong context.

They obviosly have a millitary consultant, why not an information security consultant?

I predict a lot of buzzwords and stuff that will make your avg user think it is real. But anybody who knows anything about his line of work will laugh at the incorrect crap Hollywood put into the film.

What was the name of that one movie with Angelina Jolie in it? Wasnt it called Hacker or something?

Anyways that movie had some classics like when they were talking about the new laptop with a pentium processor and a, get this, PCI bus omfg!

And of course whenever you hack on the internet like in that movie, everything has some great graphical interface with skulls and crossbones and passwords are always cracked within 3 tries.

kinda like terminator with the advanced technology they had. anyway, maybe finally the %60 or so estimated percent of people without a firewall will understand and get one!

I went and saw this last night....

There was one part at the beginning where someone was doing a "distributed brute-force attack", and Harrison was like, "Lets do a rule change on him and see how he reacts..."...then it cut to a PC with a Cisco IOS terminal session open, and he started creating an access list blocking a 172.16.x.x address ...

No kidding. The Season 4 DVD's have one feature where it shows the making of a scene where soldiers fastrope off of helicopters to assault a terrorist hideout. It was done mostly by bonafide marines, who spent quite some time working with the director to make sure everything was as true to life as possible.

And yet, CTU can routinely brute-force encrypted files in a matter of minutes. Ridiculous.

Still the best show on television, though.

Well, they always say that most attacks are inside jobs.....
