Nothing can really be harmed when your PC is off...

I've never heared of Freedom Firewall either... It might be interesting to try it at least. The security forum at dslreports.com should be a good place to find more info about it. I switched from ZoneAlarm to Kerio Personal Firewall myself because I found it to be more configurable.

Zugzwang152: your router doesnt have built-in firewall support? Hardware firewalls work a lot better than software ones iirc.
While a hardware router/NAT/firewall is great for limiting inbound connections, only a software firewall can actually control which application can have access to/from the internet. So, use both. 🙂

Until someone social engineers a person to turn it on.. 😉

Unfortunately, no. He is not joking. I think it is up to 4 states now that have passed what are being called "super-DMCA" laws that were pushed through by MPAA lobbyists. These laws, in their short-sightedness outlaw any means that hide the identity of a computer that makes a data request (something like that).

This would include firewalls and NAT routers. The MPAA is telling people that that is not true, but look at what has been done in the name of the DMCA already.
