Firewall/Router on OptimumOnline?

Here on Long Island (NY, that is) Optimum Online, provided by Cablevision, is the cable ISP. Anyone out there running a router or firewall with them?

Of course, I wouldn't want to do anything illegal or against their Terms of Use.

But I'd sure like to run a firewall like the Xrouter Pro, and they don't seem to want to change my MAC address, necessary to connect in this area.

Anybody else from these parts in that situation?

Course it'sl illegal, but once you sit behind a NAT or firewall/nat device, it doesn't matter how many computers you have hooked up. They can see the mac of the modem or the network card attached. So if you use a nat box, you'll have 1 mac of the nat interface.. is that a software or hardware router ?

What do you mean they dont want to change your MAC address ? They can see but not take..
what exit off lie or nsp or ssp are you anyway.. i'm the ex-supervisor that still have access..

LIE Exit 43, right near the Cablevision office.

Spoke tonite (finally) with a knowledgeable tech rep who asked the supervisor. Super said (off the record) should connect with no other settings - system is dynamic address, no PPPoE, no need to change MAC address, etc. Of course, Optonline neither supports, recommends, etc. the use of such devices.

Trying to use the XSense Xrouter Pro, a well-reviewed HW Firewall/router.

Unless you have another suggestion, it might be a HW prob with the box, I'm trying to contact tech support for the router.

And right now I'm running a software firewall, and have no probs.

A, ahem, very good friend of mine tried this using the AnandTech-reviewed Linksys BEFSR41, with OptOnline and to his surprise, it works like a charm! OptOnline just sees the MAC of the cable modem. My friend was very surprised it worked so well. Important to reset the router/NAT if you power up cable modem *after* router/NAT was up.
