Firewall recommendation

Hi all, I am currently looking for an firewall software, most likely free to simplify the subscription renewal process, for my uncle. He is currently only using Windows firewall, which I know is not the best, but it requires little configuration.

The problem I am having is whenever a software updates to slightly newer version, say Skype or AVG, the firewall, say Comodo, will ask for confirmation. That is not a problem for me, but my uncle is not very computer savvy and probably will block it or allow some unknown software to access Internet and due to distance, I cannot always be there to help with it.

Therefore, would someone recommend a fairly good firewall with low maintenance so I can adjust as much as possible without much interactions needed from my uncle.

Thanks in advance.

Windows Firewall is fine for your uncle because it does not require input from him for approve or deny like any other brand name firewalls such as Free Comodo or retail verison ZoneAlarm Pro.

It does matter in regards to what your unc is doing on the computer. Even if its just email, some the the videos freely sent as attachments can be chock full of viruses. And someone of your Uncle computer knowledge is a malware writers wet dream come true and a demonstration that there is a sucker born every minute. How quickly we forget we were green as grass once also, but at least we had the luxury of learning at a time when the attackers were not as sophisticated either.

But getting back to the uncle problem, he clearly needs a non intrusive layered defense. So start out with the best active AV you can get, Kaspersky strongly suggested. Then add some host files protections and certainly spyware blaster. Something like superantispyware and something else for spyware, and your uncle still will be vulnerable if he does not use somethings that seek human intervention.

The biggest single thing you could do if you decide to just use the windows SP2 firewall is to get your unc set up with a non administrative account. Or get him switched to the more secure vista using a non administrative account.

Thanks for the responses.

Sorry I was late for reply, but I do not have constant connection right now and almost always forgot about this thread.

Anyway, I was thinking of using a firewall due to the low effectiveness of the Windows firewall, as it does not seem to provide much protections at all. For some that might have use some of the firewall software before, does anyone know if Comodo can be set to nearly no interaction required once some of the stuffs are set? I am currently looking to use Comodo V3 as the choice of firewall, but I am using V2 and have not begin to play around with V3 yet.

Thanks.

As a user of comodo v3 and a prior user of comodo 2.4, I can tell you v3 is much better and the pop ups are far better explained.
