firewall question

Hey all, i have Win XP and i don't use the firewall, or any at that matter

i am wondering if i really need one, the reason im not is becasue it seems like things are slower when it is up, zonealarm screwed my quake 3 paly up...

what do u use, and do i need one for my broadband DSL... 😛

thanks

Anyone using broadband should have a firewall. I prefer hardware units like the Linksys Router, but zonealarm is a nice free software solution.

thanks OSage... i'll give that a shot, the reason i was not using ZA john is becasue it was screwing up my Q3 gaming! 😛

I was having problems with Zonealarm too so I stopped using it. It kept on screwing up CS. I had a friend of mine turn my old P233 into a Linux firewall and it works fine. But I agree, anyone on broadband should have a firewall of some sort. That sygate firewall looks nice, or a Linksys router would work well.

I use Tiny Personal Firewall, serves me well. I'm going to hold onto it until i can save up for a linksys firewall router thingy.

Another vote for Sygate here. It's free, works flawlessly under XP and the setup is a breeze.

Install one right now! You gotta be nuts to be on the net with XP without one. XP installs a few services that run automatically by default and are potential security hazards. Case in point, the Universal PnP service that they just patched this week.

You installed that patch, right?

NP...the fact that I have never noticed it when gaming online is a big reason it's the one I use. I can't even tell it's running.

price is right too.

You should definitely be using Windows XP's firewall. In fact, it's turned on by default for all network connections.

I`ve mine disabled for online gaming, helps reduce the lag etc ,you can always put it back on after,I don`t use the XP one but the Sygate firewall that comes with Ontrack Systemsuite V4 it works well with XP.

🙂
