Firewall question - What is NetBIOS?

After all this RPC stuff, which didn't get me (due to Windows updates, I did them for once 🙂), I decided to get a Firewall (free, me being a 16-yo cheapskate with no nearby computer shops).

I have blocked ~190 "intrusions", mostly the 135 hits, but 33 were "high-rated" intrusions, and it seems they were from NetBIOS.
On the Internet Security Zone tab, I have it set to Medium which means incoming NetBIOS is blocked.

What is NetBIOS?
 
er... do a search on Goggle or Microsoft's KB...?!?!
