I run a small network of up to 8 computers running DC clients and 1 FTP server used for corporate off site storage. Currently the FTP server is running on the DMZ server port for the current router. Even on the DMZ the FTP server has a problem with almost all FTP clients connecting to it. Usually a normal client times out or sends the wrong commands like someone will want to list a directory and the server gets the command to rename it. This never happens when the server is connected directly to the internet.

I plan on setting up a VPN later this year to expand my FTP storage and availability with the company and wish to dump my problematic WRT54GS at the same time.

Here?s what I was recommended:

http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=2&pid=354

Its a little out of my current price range however its what I am looking for and will probably be able to afford it by next month. Anybody have any other recommendations? Linux and PC firewalls out of the question due to the power limitations of the current computer room. Looking for something smaller and rack mountable if possible.

Cisco PIX 501 - 10 User Bundle

As long as you dont exceed 10 computers internally you are fine.

Connect the FTP to any port and put a static mapping on the PIX to the box.

Obviously run Baseline Analyzer on the box prior to putting on the internet so it is less likey to become compromised.

bluestrobe, before you give up on your WRT, check out the third-party firmware for it, such as OpenWRT. You can probably make it do what you need.

I've went through about 3 different 3rd party firmware?s and 2 froze and one was more than I ever needed. I don't need the switch and I don't need the wireless so its overkill at the moment. The WRT runs way too hot for my liking as its usually running a 100F on the plastic top which is hard on any electronic device. It likes to freeze under hard use too as this happens at the times the company is uploading and downloading from my ftp server.

bluestrobe, I have not had any WRTs run as hot as you describe, and I have not had freezes under load. If you'd like help to debug things, please post more details.

I found information all over that showed the WRT54G and WRT54GS running hot and even Linksys admitted to it. I've been in contact with 4-5 units that all run about the same temperature. As I said though, the switch and the wireless on mine are never used so I might as well upgrade to something that better suites my needs.
