Could the firewall in the 514 router be keeping my XP Home computers, from being able to run Windows Update? I am still getting an "Error number: 0x80072EE2", after searching and changing things for five months. Unable to update either computer on my small home network in that time frame.

I give up a while, then work on it for a few days and give up again. I am not much on networking, that is for sure.

Why not plug one of your PC's directly in to the Cable/DSL Modem and see if you can run Windows Update. That would at least confirm your suspicions.

c3p0, It works ok that way. Thanks!! Brain fade, I guess.

I Talked with D-link techs and they tell me there is no way to turn the firewall off?? That don't sound right but may have got one of those "GTIOTPASAP" type techs. O well, I needed a better faster router anyway. Any suggestions??

Well, I sure like my Linksys WRT54G. It's probably not the best out there, but it's been solid as a rock for me. Good Luck!

c3p0, Thanks for the info on your WRT54G. I have ordered a WRT54GS & WPC54GS card.
These will replace the D-Link DI-514 & CNet CNWLC-811 LAN PC Card.
I am running a Westell Wirespeed DSL modem with Bellsouth as my ISP.

Do think I can expect a significant speed increase?

Too many variables to consider.

Quality of your ISP and phone lines are the 2 biggies. However, I do like Linksys hardware over D-Link. Good Luck!

You really believe that D-Link is selling Hardware that does not allow Windows Updates. :shocked:Buying new Hardware might or might Not, but most of the time it is not a substitute system's knowledge.

Put you computer IP on the DMZ, and disable your Software Firewall.

If Windows Update works than it is a matter on configuring correctly the Firewalls.

What is DMZ? Read this: Cable/DSL Routers - NAT, Ports, SPI.
