Firewall, Cisco Pix or a PC w/ Linux ?

I'm planning a proof-of-concept for a client. We have a monitoring solution over their office that i need to replicate the DB on our server over a secure encrypted connection. Finally, the customer will have a Cisco PIX 515 but its not required for now. What would be easier for the purpose of the test ?

PC with FreeBSD or Linux ?

A smaller Cisco Pix ?

And if we push a little further, let suppose we need a few secures VPN. Each concurrent connection require a 3DES encryption. What would you recomment ?

really depends on what you want to do. If you need a good firewall with great performance and pretty good VPN support/performance (careful with 3DES, it is a hog) then a PIX is a really flexible firewall.

Sonicwall makes nice SOHO firewall/VPN appliances.

linux PC is also a good firewall, but I'd be wary of the VPN support and compatibility with other VPN devices as well as 3DES performance with multiple tunnels.

<edit> you should be able to demo a cisco PIX direct from cisco or your local reseller/VAR.
