FireGL vs. Radeon?

I just bought a ThinkPad T60p with the FireGL Mobility 5250, and I was wondering how my frames should be in games.

With my Radeon X800XT, I get close to 50 frames in World of Warcraft, but with my new FireGL 5250, I'm only getting around 15. How do FireGL cards normally compare to Radeon cards as far as gaming? Should there be THAT much of a performance hit?

I'm kind of dissapointed that this FireGL card is so bad for gaming; I'm hoping this is not normal, and there is something I can do to fix it.

It is normal. Rendering cards like the FireGL and Quadro series are known for being bad in gaming because they weren't made for it. Back in the day I went from a Quadro 4 980 XGL to a 6800, and man what a difference.

This has come up multiple times on the forums over the last decade.

FireGL is designed for CAD. All cards designed for CAD will choke on most games, even tho' they may have more video memory and a "faster" GPU.

You have a professional's laptop. A workstation. It kicks ass for what it was designed to do.

it looks like hardware wise the 5200 is similar to the mobility x1600 so it should be able to get gaming performance around what the x1600 can do, you might want to try standard catalyst drivers instead of workstation ones (though backup first as you could hose your system) as the workstation drivers have some overhead which is nto necessary for gaming. Though if you also use it for graphics workstation purposes you may be stuck using the standard drivers.
