On one machine I'm running 3.5.7 and Firefox has been bugging me to upgrade to 3.5.8. Of course, this always happens when I access my browser, so I say "later." I've been seeing some posts about 3.6, saying it's good, etc. Why then isn't Firefox offering me the 3.6 upgrade instead?

It always does it 1 step at a time. If your a few versions old, you'll have to update a few times to be current.

You have to upgrade to 3.5.8 first, then Firefox will offer to upgrade to 3.6.

So, why doesn't my machine running 3.5.8 prompt me to update to the next version?

Not really sure why but i've seen this happen also. I just end up downloading the installer manually in that case.

you shouldn't hold off on security updates. last number being incremented generally means a small patch for things like security holes.
3.6 is just a new version number adding new features, i believe both .5 and .6 will be kept up to date for a while right?

I just looked it up and according to mozilla: Firefox 3.5.x will be maintained with security and stability updates until August 2010.

Do you have ietab installed? That add-on isn't supported in 3.6, and it (or another add-on not supported in 3.6) could keep FF from recommending you to upgrade to 3.6.

Since updating to 3.6, non-generic bookmark icons are now displayed as a site is visited. Since in private browsing mode they are not retained between sessions however previously they were not displayed at all which is is my preference. Is there a switch to disable this feature (from "about:config")?

Try setting this to false...

browser.chrome.site_icons;true

Thanks! I should have found that but inexplicably used find rather than filter. :$

I was also running 3.5.7 & FF asked if i wanted to upgrade to 3.6, so i did. One of my add-ons wasn't working properly so i went back to 3.5.7
Now it's asking me to upgrade to 3.5.8

because 5.8 came out after 3.6
.8 is a security patch for 5.7
you don't skip those.
those don't break plugins.

Unsupported add-ons would not keep Firefox from updating.

You should be using Coral IE Tab instead because AFAIK IE Tab is no longer being developed.
