Firefox tabs question

Does anyone know how to stop FF from opening up in new tabs all the time? That's not very clear, sorry. I've got a wireless M$ keyboard at work with buttons that I can assign to open apps and/or web pages. Before the last FF update, when I hit one of those buttons it would open that link up in the current window or tab. And now every time I hit a button it opens a new tab.

Yes, I checked Tools>Options>Tabs but nothing there seems to make a difference. Ideas please and thank you,

In the address bar, type this: about:config
In the filter line, paste this: browser.link.open_external
Change the value to 3
Should be default, though.

duhh... it's supposed to be a 1 not a 3, that worked. sweet.
