Firefox slows down when opening images

I did a fresh install of Win 2K and Firefox (both 1.50 and the update 1.51 or whatever). All the settings for Firefox are the defaults. I've used the same setup before with no problems, but now the system suddenly slows down if I open images. I can open as many pages as I want, but if it's an image, the system slows down.

The mouse suddenly slows down, as does any scrolling. Once all the pages load though, the system speeds up again. Until another image opens.

It even seems that some page with thumbnails slow it a bit as well.

I've tried reloading Firefox, but the problem remains. What is going on?

Specs:
2 Ghz P4
512 megs RAM
ATA 100 HD

Edit: I've tried reinstalling it, but the problem remains.
