Firefox slows down when images are opened

I've just done a fresh install of Win 2K and Firefox (both 1.50 and the update 1.51 or whatever). All the settings for Firefox are the defaults. I've used the same setup before with no problems, but now the system suddenly slows down if I open images in a new link. I can open as many pages as I want, but if it's an image, the system slows down. Even clicking the link from this thread did it.

The mouse suddenly slows down, as does any scrolling I try to do on the original web page. Once all the pages load though, the system speeds up again.

I've tried reloading Firefox, but the problem remains. What is going on?
