Is there any way so when I hit Ctrl + T (new tab command) it opens the tab with my homepage loaded on it...rather than just a blank page?
 
I use the All-In-One-Gestures extension and open a new tab with home page in a heartbeat with mouse movement.
Maybe try that extension.
