There is a about:config option for Firefox that will be available from the gui in a future version which enables a beefier version of the "do not track" option in the browser.

While the "Do not track" is a request for not tracking that tracking sites are not required to honor

The information below blocks known tracking sites.

type about:config in the address bar then search privacy.trafficprotection

you'll see to options privacy.trafficprotection.enabled will be set to false by default.

double click it to set it to true.

When you next visit a site that has allows tracker sites to watch you you'll see a shield before the address.

Further details are found in this episode of Security Now

skip to 1 hr and 25 minutes

It doesn't block ad content it inhibits tracking sites. It is list based from this group so it's not perfect but it is cool feature in firefox.

Sounds promising, thanks. Any idea when this will make it into a final version?

If you already use ABP/uBlock (with privacy/tracking lists) it doesn't look like this will add any additional protection since it's just blocking based on Disconnect's list.

Don't use anything newer than 28 and don't update.
The newer ones are chock-full of holes/problems.

I don't know what the ESR releases are but if that's not one of them then it's a bad idea. If you really don't want to use a newer (major) version then at least make sure you're on an ESR release so you receieve security updates. Also this seems to be (way) outside the scope of this thread.

According to the video link in my op... of a show hosted by Leo Laporte (formerly of Tech TV) and Steve Gibson (a security blogger/expert) the version in which this will become a gui option is 39. Don't know why that long but maybe I am not recalling what was said correctly. It starts at about 1 hour 25 mins. into the video and I edited the OP to correct the erroneous information posted previously about the time.

True enough, but I do appreciate that this is a feature in a fairly widely used browser among tech enthusiasts.

Also supposedly with this feature turned on the browser shows a noticeable bump in responsiveness from blocking the trackers on the list.

It feels a bit snappier but that could be just a placebo observation based on the video I watched.
