Firefox - how to use gmail for mailto: links?

I'd like Firefox to open up gmail whenever I click on an e-mail link. I googled it and found some instructions.. that don't work.

I did exactly that.
It didn't work.

It asks me to add gmail as an application for mailto links.. and I click on add application. So far so good..

but then when I click on a mail link, MS Outlook (which I haven't setup properly) opens instead.

And under tools->options->applications, "mailto" does not appear at all as a content type.

download google toolbar... you can hide the tool bar and or customize it as much as you want... i prefer its search box vs default FF search bar.

Google Toolbar is great for many different reasons.

OK.. installed Google toolbar.. and now I can use gmail for mailto links.

Problem is.. I cannot configure google toolbar. If I check/uncheck things (particularly.. uncheck send usage stats).. my settings are NOT SAVED.

This is a serious privacy issue.. Google toolbar is acting as spyware!

Firefox did this for me automatically out of the box.

In Firefox there is an add on which is provided to it . You can download it from the internet and add to the firefox.
