A while back some site whose name escapes me cause Firefox to crash on my Linux box.
Aside from that...

It crashes occasionally when using java for me, but still far less often than IE did. At least when FF crashes explorer.exe doesn't get restarted.

Firefox 1.0 has started crashing for me, mainly when I'm checking my Gmail account. I've got several extensions installed, so I'm wondering which one of those is the problem.

Firefox crashes on me occasionally with Java, and almost always when I view sites that have embedded .wmv files. It's really annoying, and I haven't heard of any solutions for it.

What's the next "new" browser?

Opera is coming out a new browser which is to Opera as firefox is to mozilla. Lots of new features and optimizations.

The only time I've ever had a Firefox crash on me were due to a old version of a free libswf plugin in Linux, and it crash once on a WinXP machine I was working on.

The WinXP had bad memory.

Check out memtest86 and run that for a few hours for "just incase"

You have to watch some of the extensions you install. Some of them can wreak havoc with the browser. With 8.0 I had trouble with some of the skins installed causing problems. I haven't had any trouble with 1.0 on three different systems as yet, although I don't have a lot of extensions installed on either of them.
To me it's a solid product. Those having problems might want to uninstall the browser, then reinstall from scratch and begin loading the extensions they like. I would only add one every couple of days to be sure you can pin down a problem when it happens.

Java causes crashes for me EVERY time I use it. It's not so much a crash as it is the fact that JAVA WILL NOT UNLOAD AND I CAN NO LONGER BROWSE! I have to kill firefox to get it back to normal. Oh yeah, PDFs suck too.

solid advice there buz2b, thanks for the help
and yes PDFs suck :p
i mean, are a pain in the butt..
some extensions, like the foxytunes one, while functional, and COOL, hookinto things like winamp and WiMP, so if either of those crash, so does foxytunes, and then firefox follows.. usually its just a blaze of not responding windows liable to make anyone MAD...*twitch*
/rant

anywho, there are some handy things out there for FF

Deltek Tima and Expense (based on Bea) doesn't like Firefox or Mozilla very much. I have to use IE to do my timesheet now.

Quick correction on my earlier post; I meant .8, not 8.0. Sorry!
I know it's easy for me to say but I haven't had a lick of problems with FF, either with Java or with PDF's. Maybe just lucky but I think it might have more to do with my (lack of) extensions. The only one I have installed is the Foxforcast weather one. The browser has always been stable, fast and reliable. The only hitch I have with it is the "click and wait" delay it has before it starts. Howver, I understand there is a workaround for this but I just haven't bothered.
FYI I have XP (home and pro on different systesms) w/SP2 and all updates installed. I am running Firefox 1.0, Acrobat reader 6.0. I DID NOT use the plug in to install acrobat either. I let acrobat open the documents itself. Some interesting things from the Firefox plug in site:
On Windows, Mozilla can be used with Sun's Java Runtime Environment (JRE). It can not be used with the Microsoft Java VM, as that can only be used with Internet Explorer. Also, versions of Sun's JRE older than 1.3.0_01 will not work. It is recommended that you use Java Runtime Environment 5.0 or later if possible.

It is possible to install JRE 5.0 Update 1 from within Mozilla, using XPInstall technology. This is by far the easiest way to install Java. If you can not use XPInstall, you can download the JRE 5.0 Update 1 full installer and use that instead.

On some systems, JRE 1.4.2 and later do not work. In this case, you can use JRE 1.4.1_07 until the issue you are having is resolved. Note that this release is no longer supported by Sun.

Important! If you are using a zipped build of Mozilla or Mozilla Firefox, you may need to add this registry entry. Mozilla and Firefox should add it if it doesn't exist, but it doesn't always work for whatever reason. Some users report requiring it even if they have used the Mozilla Firefox installer, so try it first if you have problems with JRE 1.4.2 or later.
There are a few links in those paragraphs but I'm a bit too lazy to go back and install them for you. However, if you go to the plug in FAQ link near the top left of the browser and then go to the Java FAQ's, you'll see this. Perhaps it can help. Good luck to you all. Just know that Firefox 1.0 can and does work wonderfully for a great many folks. I hope you can solve the problems you have because I would HATE to be stuck with IE as my browser. :frown:

If you want firefox you definitley need two browsers....... it's kind of like driving a Ford, not too bad as long as you have a Chevy at home for the important stuff ;)

I really like FF but just can't put up with the bugs and problems..... they dicked around for a month on the FF support forum with my problem (well, a lot of people besides me had it) with no solution. I can start FF and after a random amount of time it will just stop loading a web page, doesn't matter what site. The only way to make it work again is to stop FF and restart it....... but, when I do this I have 2 FF services running, when the probelm happens and I shut down FF I can start task manager and it will not let me stop the FF service, the only way to stop it is to reboot the pc. FF is a cool toy, but it's not a mainstream browser, and IMO never will be.... and that's a shame.

(('m starting to sound like a traveling Mozilla salesman but I'm not) I would respectfully dissagree with your assumption that Firefox is not a mainstream browser. Recent story on the news that Firefox has gained steadily on IE's market share in recent times. I believe it was up around 5% or so; nothing to write home about but coming on stronger each day. I think we are easily numbed into forgetting all the bugs, restrictions and security holes in IE, as long as it doesn't "burp" on us. The things like swiss cheese with security though; no matter how many updates and patches they release.
Even though I've not had one problem with Firefox, security and speed alone would still make me much more tolerant of any that showed.

People were saying the same thing about Linux years ago and look at it now, IDC predicts the Linux market will be worth $35 billion by 2008.
