Firefox driving me nuts

I have a laptop that I use at home and work. At home I connect wireless to my roadrunner. At work I use a usb cell phone connection. After I installed the software for the sprint wireless I get this network popup window that says choose network connection. It seems to popup whenever I type something in the google search box on firefox tool bar. If I type something straight into google webpage it doesn't happen.

I have been using firefox for a while before I installed the sprint wireless and didn't have this happen until I installed sprint software. If I click cancel on the popup I go right back to surfing. This happens when I am at home surfing on road runner and when I am connected at work and using the sprint wireless.

mmmmmmmmm I dunno. There is a reason I installed firefox. ;)

I will have to try that and I will get back to you. I am on my desktop at the moment.

That is not the only time that I get the popup, but I do get it every time I use the google search box for searching. I haven't tried using a different search engine for the search box to see if that makes a difference. I will check that also.

I saw a video on you tube that I wanted to show the guys at work so I left firefox open to the page so I didn't have to actually connect to the net. We were watching it and that popup must have opened every 20 seconds. I suppose that was because I wasn't connected though.

Ok, Here is the deal on what I have found. This problem doesn't happen in IE near as I can tell. I surfed for a while without incident. So seems to be browser specific. Now that being said I did error in my prior description of the problem happening.

First off are you familiar with google browse by name feature? Article. Here is an excerpt of the article and what I did to use the feature.
Type in ?about:config? in the address bar of firefox, then type in ?keyword.url? to search for that configuration key. If you want the neato ?browse by name? search in firefox, as opposed to the default ?I?m feeling lucky? search, just modify that preference, by pasting in:
http://www.google.com/search?i...id=navclient&gfns=1&q=
Then save that by pressing ?Ok?. Now you?re free to use the improved address bar. Go nuts, since now you can search by entering the search terms in the address bar and pressing enter. You will never need to visit www.google.com again!

Now my error was the google search box bringing up the popup every time. I should have actually said when I just type a word into the address box of firefox. It will bring up the popup every time. Like I said before it will just come out of nowhere at other times. I have 2 desktops that I have done this same setup on and don't have any problem with. I had firefox on this laptop for quite a while with the above setup and never had this happen till I installed the sprint wireless adapter. The really weird thing is the popup has a combo box that always says 3G connection and if I click the connect button in the popup it will come back that there is no dial tone. So it is looking at the modem on the laptop. I don't even understand why it would do that as the sprint connection is supposed to be broadband.

I will take more time to read this throughly later but I had a couple questions.

1. Do you mind using the goggle toolbar. I have that setup using the classic toolbar. Not sure if this will cause same problem or if you will use it but its a start.
2. What happens when you run firefox in safe mode and new profile?

If you change it back in about:config does the popup go away? Couldn't you use the search box when you want more varied results?

The whole reason I found that article is because some POS search engine hijacked my google when I typed in my address bar. I happened onto that article and thought it was right up my alley. I have been using the ctrl+enter in IE for years for when I just type in the address without the www and the .com. I did this in firefox for a while until the search engine hijacked and everything I had checked said google was my defalt until I found the above article. I liked what it sounded like and after using it I decided to keep it and added it to all of my computers.

I haven't tried safe mode and I am not sure what new profile is. I hadn't even thought of removing it from the config. I will try that and post back results. Yes I can use the search box for varied results I just found the the above article and really liked the results. Just aggravates me that installing an adapter that I use probably 2-3 hours a week caused this.

Edit/
I just tried safe mode still happens. I removed the search line from about:config still happens. On the plus side I just figured out that in firefox you don't have to hold control down for it to fill in the www and the .com like IE. Yes I am a fairly recent convert to firefox.

I can do that but I just did a fresh install back to factory condition about 5 weeks ago. My usb ports quit working and that was the last resort. They work back to normal.

Anyhow on the fresh install I used firefox for a week or so before installing my sprint internet. I didn't get the network popup until I installed the sprint software. Anyhow I will give that a shot here in a bit.

Thanks.

Is it necessary? If I want to connect to the internet when I am not near home and my wireless router.

Here is the device, the software is necessary to connect to the net. I don't run the software constantly only when I am at work and want to use the net. which isn't often.

I did try to create the new profile and had the same results. I haven't tried reinstalling firefox yet. I am not thrilled about the idea of reinstalling all the add ons, passwords etc.

I am reading the Compass? 597 by Sierra Wireless manual now but I have a question on what you said earlier post
"The really weird thing is the popup has a combo box that always says 3G connection and if I click the connect button in the popup it will come back that there is no dial tone. So it is looking at the modem on the laptop."
Does this popup box show in manual? You think it maybe activated from the modem can you disable the modem or is it being used?

from manual
Stopping and Application from Being Launched g
There are several ways to stop an application from being launched automatically when you
connect to certain network profiles. They include:
? Remove the application from the list displayed in the App Launcher tab of the settings
window. To do this, select the application you want to remove and then click the
Remove button. Note that this also removes the application from the Application Bar.
? Configure the application for manual launch only. To do this, click the ... button next to
the name of the application in the list on the App Launcher settings tab. Then, set the
Launch Options field to Manual.
? Prevent ALL applications from being launched with a particular network profile by
removing the check from the Enable Application Launcher box on the General tab of
the profile properties window.
Note Although all of these options are available for applications that have been added
by users, only the last option is available for the Sprint-defined applications in the
Application Bar.

do you have any apps set to autolaunch that maybe causing popup window?

Have you tried a reinstall of firefox to se if it may help seeing how you dont want to uninstall it?
Also get Mozbackup and make a backup of your profile with all checkable item checked.

I will wait for answers and see if reading manual help more.

I do not see the popup in the manual. I have a 3G networks entry in my dial up networking entries under networking properties. It wasn't there before installing the sprint software. I thought it was weird that it put it in there as this is supposed to be a broadband connection. I don't use the modem should I disable it in device manager?

I have not added any applications to the sprint software. Actually I have done nothing but install the SW and go into settings and turn off the wifi and install updates with my permission. My reasoning for the 2 options are I have my wifi networks setup on windows software before installing sprint and that would be just another program running all the time. I turned off updates as that is what caused my usb ports to quit working a while back. It took an update then just 2 days later it took another which I thought was weird and after that update after bringing out of hibernation my usb ports ceased working.

The only thing I have tried to do with firefox is as you have suggested here. I have just found this popup annoying but as time goes it gets even more annoying and brought my problem here hoping for some help, which I am getting. Thanks.

Edit/
Just installed firefox over itself still getting the popup.

Lets get some thing off the try list.....

1.Install firefox again to see if it repairs some missing or corrupt part of current install
2.D/L Mozbackup and do a backup of your firefox profile in case we want to uninstall firefox fully later. With the backup we can restore back to time it was backed if needed. Backup all the setting that you can check in mozbackup.
3.Disable modem to see if somehow it was causing the popup window and test for that.
4.Next time you see popup window tell me anything you think is helpful about it. e.g. maybe there some check boxes or other setting there.

Apparently I didn't get my edit posted before you came back. I did a reinstall of firefox last night. I also just disabled the modem I still get the popup.

I copied the screen and cut out the popup. For lack of better place I uploaded the pic at photoshow. you can see it here. On the top right of the page click on watch photo show.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Yes that helps.
Any other connection in the drop down list for the connection dialog box and what do you see when you click the properties button from dialog box? Can you post that?

There is another connection in the box. It is called CDMA I can't remember if it was originally on the computer or if the sprint setup added it.

I uploaded more screen shots of the properties. Looks like standard DUN stuff. you will find the pics on the same link as above.

Try unchecking the "establish a dial up connection every time I connect to the internet" setting in the properties dialog box. You might need to reboot to get setting working right with the new setting.
