I used to use IE, and the IE paradigm for bookmarks is pretty transparent to me:

Favorites folder under Documents and Settings in Windows. Folders under the Favorites folder each contain one or more favorites (a favorite in IE is equivalent to a bookmark in Firefox, or so it seems to me).

In IE you can tuck a favorite in any folder(s) you want, cut paste, etc.

Now, in Firefox, things aren't so clear and truly I hardly use Firefox bookmarks and it's bugging me. I see no way of creating folders in Firefox. For instance, I'd like to have one called News and put links to news sources in that folder. I can't see a way to do it. I long ago imported my IE bookmarks into Firefox but finding them has me flummoxed so I don't do it. In Firefox there's a thing at the right side that looks something like >> and it's a dropdown list and I think it's called the Bookmarks Folder or something like that, although I've had trouble with it, but I do use it and try to put my most wanted bookmarks in there for accessibility. IE has a similar thing and if you right click you can choose Sort by Name, which is helpful. In the Firefox version I don't see a way to sort by name. It's kind of a madhouse. Thanks for helping me understand this. I'm sure there's a way to clarify all this. In Organize Bookmarks in Firefox I'm not finding things simpler.

Click on the Bookmarks button, right click in the field, pick New Folder. To organize, open Organize Bookmarks, Views, Sort, and pick which sorting option you want.

Yes, that's how I do it. I remember having a hard time before trying to figure out how to organize my bookmarks.

First off, I think you might find the "All-in-One Sidebar" extension to be very useful. That's how I organize all of my bookmarks. Once you have that going click the bookmarks tab. From there you can add them in. When you installed FF it should have given you the option to import your bookmarks from IE. Should save you some time there. As for organizing your list, as said above, simply right click in the bookmarks window, and it'll give you the options to create a "New bookmark," "New Folder," or "New Seperator,(just a horizontal line to better your organization and which I find pretty useful)." That should do it for you.

I've had problems with the ff v3 bookmarks menu also. It's sluggish and keyboard user unfriendly. It's going to drive me back to ie7/8.

In addition, like the op, the new bookmark interface was a little difficult to figure out at first - I think I struggled with making new folders and then being unable to locate them. I did figure it out eventually.

Another problem I have with ff (v2 & 3) is that it has problems displaying posts after ~60-70 in anandtech forums when configured to display 100 posts/page. ie doesn't have this problem.

With the ie7pro add-on for ie, ff has lost most of its edge for me. I will miss flagfox though. Obviously, I'll still use it on linux machines.
