Firefox bookmarks are gone

Ok, so of course I have to do tech support for my mom, who lives 4 hours away. Well, she calls me this morning frantic because all of her bookmarks are gone. She says the computer froze and so she restarted it and they were just gone. Obviously something else happened, but everyone else in my family is computer illiterate, so they have no idea. I can't really think of any reason why bookmarks would just delete themselves, so I know someone had to have done something.

Any ideas?
 
Check they haven't been somehow moved or dragged into another folder in the bookmark structure. I don't use firefox much (Opera fo lyfe) but perhaps all her normal bookmarks have moved into a folder in the bookmark menu?
