firefox - any way to have it autorename files if a dupe?

as in, i save a pic called image.jpg, if i then save another image but happens to have the same name i want it to default to chrome behaviour of renaming to image (1).jpg instead.

i've seen plugins that do this if you add specific location (context menu then shows as "save image to:" but that dictates i have to setup every conceivable folder before hand

i just want to add this feature to the usual save as dialogue box.

p.s, any way to stop firefox having to reload just to install a new addon? chrome doesn't seem to need it anywhere near as often.

That usually depends on whether or not the add on has a Registry or other entry in memory that requires a reload to refresh the memory.

You'll have to do some configuring, but it's a useful addon. I've used it in the past for mass downloads of links on a page. I haven't used it in awhile though.

This is what I got using DTAOneClick with a random cat pic(cause cats are awesome) from Google...

I just enabled this after a long time of not using it, so your default behavior might be different, but something I did made it work :^D

ok, tried this. it works if i choose to use this extension to download everything and to rename instead of overwrite

Your observations confuse me a bit tommo123, because whenever I make a save of the same file name in FF, it adds the number as you mentioned Chrome does. I set it to download to a specific folder, and not ask me, if that helps.

I get the same behavior as tommo, but I have Fx ask me where to save each time. I wonder if that's the difference.

Yes, that is the difference.

Firefox does not auto-rename if it's "Save As"; it auto-renames otherwise.

The rationale is that if you're doing Save-As, you're probably saving files to different locations, and it has no way of knowing whether there's a conflict in the final location that you are going to save to (the rename is set and sent to the Windows file dialog when the dialog is opened, and it cannot automatically change as you change locations). And also if you're doing Save-As, you might have your own way of renaming (maybe "-1" instead of " (1)" to avoid adding spaces to filename). With Chrome's behavior, if I have a file name "foo.bar" in my current download directory and Save-As another "foo.bar" in Chrome, it will suggest "foo (1).bar", which doesn't change even when I switch to a different directory without a "foo.bar" or one that already has a "foo (1).bar". And it will always default to " (n)" even if you prefer to avoid spaces and parentheses in favor of more command-line-friendly characters like hyphen or underscore.

I personally prefer the Firefox approach that renames when I have downloads on autopilot but leaves things untouched if I'm doing things manually. But whichever behavior you prefer depends on your personal usage patterns and preferences.

the better way would be to have a choice. for me firefox without an addon to correct this behaviour is seriously annoying.
