Firefox and login auto-fill

On my XP machines, when I go to a certain web site and log in, my login name and password (in this case my library card number for the library's web site), are automatically inserted and I just have to hit Enter. However, on my Windows 7 machine, I have to remember my library card number (it's like 16 digits or something) and I have to scramble to find it, copy/paste. Is there some way to get Firefox to auto-fill login/password info? Is this an issue with Windows 7 or is the configuration just not set right?

Edit: Going into Options/Security I see that this was not checked:

[ ] Remember passwords for sites

I never had to check that before.

Wierd. That option has always been checked by default with Firefox. I usually manually un-check it.

Why? Nobody else uses my machines, so that's why I want autofill on that stuff. This particular site (my library) wants the code on my card, which is a 14 digit integer. Not impossible to remember or type but I have never memorized it and I always have to look it up in a table on my computer, a hassle. My other computers just autofill it.

The goofiest thing is happening now on this Windows 7 Ultimate laptop. I have the box checked to remember passwords. I go to the site, enter my name and the 14 digit integer and I get a popup at the top left asking me if I want the password remembered. It looks like this:

[Remember password]

I click that button and nothing happens. The popup is supposed to go away and henceforth the password is inserted automatically. However the popup persists after the button is pressed. Next time I hit the site I have to go through the same dumb process. I guess I will maybe have to uninstall Firefox and reinstall. Maybe then it will work.

So, why is this happening?

I tried a bunch of things, searched on the problem, read Firefox's own solutions, tried them, nothing worked. I finally just uninstalled Firefox 8.0, including all its customizations and reinstalled from scratch, 8.0.1. Now it does remember passwords. All my cookies, history etc. is wiped out but at least it works... Man, I was getting sick of having to log into every site every time.
