Firefox and Avant Browser

I've read these Firefox threads, and I tried it myself. All the things you guys like about Firefox are done automatically by Avant Browser, and they are all built right in. Tabbing is better because it happens "out of the box" with a normal click of the mouse, instead of having to use the middlemouse or install anything else. It just happens. Avant blocks popups, ads on the page, scripts, java, etc. You name it, you can block it. It also loads faster than IE, or at least not any slower.

It also has tons of user made skins and evidently it's easy to make more. And the built in Google Toolbar is an added bonus. I use it at least 10 times a day.

Problem is (for some of you), the guy designed it using IE as a base. I'm all for that "down with the man" stuff, but at the end of the day I want something that works well, and Avant works great. It works so well that I just wasted 3 minutes typing this to let you guys know how well it works :p

Firefox seems pretty good too, but it seems like it's trying to become Avant Browser, really.

Firefox is form teh ground up program.

Avant just sticks a new UI and interface to security infested IE.

Yes I understand the security issues of IE, and that's definately a valid point. I also think some people take it a little too far. As long as you are using Windows, you are vulnerable to all sorts of crap. Not using IE isn't going to change much for people who already live in fortresses.

Most people here are not exactly novice users and already have security up the wazoo with routers, firewalls, SpywareBlaster, Spybot, Adaware 6, and any one of a number of Virus programs installed. The extra steps Avant takes to block activex controls, java, and scripts add to that security even more.

I will concede the point however. When they make a browser from the ground up that automatically tabs, I'll probably try to deal without the rest of Avant's features. Until then I'll just scan my pc 2 times a week and keep checking back.

Since I started using Firebird last year, I've completely forgotten about pops, spyware, and security issues. I just surf the web now. I run Ad-aware once every two months or so and I usually just find a few cookies from instances when I've used IE.

Also, Firefox is built to use tabs. The default settings are just set so you have to middle click.

Yeah I tried to configure it to my left mouse button and evidently you can't. That's a deal breaker for me. I've been using Avant for so long I can't get used to that damn middle mouse wheel.

ok i've got a question....if something opens a new window in avant, does it maximize it to the whole tab, or does it actually create a new properly sized window? i've had some problems where javascript opens what should be a specifically sized window and tabbed browsing screws up the formatting of it...i think opera is the only one i've seen so far to do it right, unless you have firefox open up a new browser for the window

It will open it into a full size window, just like the others. I haven't tried Opera in a long time. Maybe I'll try that next.

Btw, I'm in Firefox again now, and will try to get used to this middlemouse thing. Hopefully they will make it default for opening in a tab every time you click a link or type in a URL or use the GoogleBar or open a favorite too.

If you want the new tabs to open with left click, download the Tabbrowser extension. It lets all new windows as open as tabs. Also, remember that Firebird isn't even at 1.0 yet. :)

I realize that now. I got the impression at first that Firefox was the completed version of Mozilla. I have gotten some skins for it, learned my way around a little, and will go get the tabbrowser extension right now. If it lets me open every single window in a tab, I'm hooked :)

If you don't want to deal with the bulk of TBE (it's a little resource heavy for my tastes), try Tabbrowser Preferences, which will do the same thing.
