And they've removed compact mode completely, changing in about:config no longer works.

I've been using Firefox since version 1, in fact even its predecessor, Netscape Navigator, but this is the end of the road for me.
Their normal mode is horrible on non-touch monitors, and I'm sick and tired of spending hours looking for config options and css fixes every few updates. People at Mozilla clearly know what they're doing, as evidenced by their journey from a 25-30% market share to <5% over less than a decade.

Between two evils (Chrome and Edge), I've switched to Edge at work while I experiment with a few browsers, and I'll stay at 90.0.2 for a few months at home PC until I settle with something.
Firefox can DIAF as far as I'm concerned.

That is unfortunate for sure. I don't like they are removing ways to reconfigure the browser.

You may want to look into Vivaldi browser, it seems really good and also the Brave browser.

I'm stilling hanging in there with 88.0.1. Firefox really needs to start listening to what little users it has left. I like some of the newer features it's adding but don't want to pay the price of having less customization. I mean are they actually gaining more users by making the changes they have made? I've only see people flee over the years. At one point I went with Pale Moon for a good while and once again I'm considering looking elsewhere to use the internet.

I'm in the 'anything but chromium' camp. Currently running 78esr, but I'll be getting the changes eventually. I've poked around on the secretary's machine, and the newest version is "fine". That's with a lower case "f". Not much to love, nothing I absolutely hate, but the whole direction they've been going in is hugely disappointing. They're trying to outchrome chrome, and that isn't gonna happen. You'll always be second place at best, and nobody on earth can compete with google's advertising presence.

Firefox is a niche browser at this point, and I don't really see it changing. Instead of trying to beat chrome, embrace your power users, and make it the best browser for them. They're the ones that are gonna advertise to the normies, and even if the normies won't use all the awesome features you're yammering on about, they'll think "Yea, that sounds pretty good, and I trust your judgement". They aren't gonna beat chrome doing that, but they aren't gonna beat them anyway. Being a solid niche browser with a loyal following is better than hemorrhaging users as they are now. There aren't enough 'anything but chromium' users that'll put up with constantly being shit on to maintain a browser.

Totally agree, embrace your power users!! We'll see, I really still like the fact that they are pretty much the last ones that are not based on chromium. Monopoly is not good for us IMO.

Yeah, some of the privacy stuff is commendable, and just not being chromium based is a bonus for some of us, so the bar isn't even that high.
In FF89 thread I mentioned that MSFT also had too much vertical space in Win Explorer in Win 11, and like literally in the next build there's a "Compact View" option. It really shouldn't be that hard...

Vivaldi's selling points are a turnoff for me. Their pitch is "you don't need 40 extensions, we have everything out-of-the-box". I only used like 2-3 extensions with FF, I don't need "built-in mail client" and "integrated notes keeper", it sounds like a lot of bloat.
At least it has a proper menu bar, Edge/Chrome don't, I found some extension but it's not quite what I expect.

Brave sounds interesting, will give it a go.
I haven't tried Opera in like 15 years back when it wasn't Chromium. I didn't like it much at the time.
