Firefox 6 Final Available for Download

Five had a serious memory leak glitch. Hopefully 6 has corrected this.

Isn't that supposed to be addressed in 7, not 6? Not sure, just asking.

Anyways, I was FF fan for just about forever... until 5. The memory leak was so bad I was forced to switch to Chrome.

Whats the difference between 6 and 8? Just installed it and other then some of my addons not working which I knew would happen I dont see any other reason to use it.

Just installed it and it seems faster so far. Looking forward to the next version and the memory improvements!

Also, I noticed I now can close firefox and open it back up right away instead of having to wait until it is cleared from ram.

For day to day use? Very little. Occasionally I'll see an unfamiliar icon pop up or, something, but general fit and finish is pretty much the same.

I don't really tear into the guts, so I'm sure there's stuff I'm not aware of, but from an end users point of view, it's the same.

For your addons, have you disabled compatibility checking? I've had very few addons that couldn't be made to work when switching browser versions.

I'm using 1.1.1 There's a few ways to get it to work. Easiest is to install addon compatibility reporter, or Nightly tester tools, then disable compatibility checking. You can also edit about:config to disable compatibility checking, or you can edit the addon to say it supports a higher version than it really does.

All of this is at your own risk of course, but there's little chance of anything more damaging than the addon not working properly. With their new versioning system, t's more a PITA than it used to be. It used to be you could expect more potential problems by going to a major version number, but that doesn't apply anymore.

I have tested all of the regular stuff with firefox 6.0 and can confirm that performance hasnt changed much apart from peacekeeper which has improved by 4%. The other stuff I tried was Sunspider and V8 which both improved by 1%.

Can someone explain this to me? I upgraded and it told me that Java Console 6.0.26 was incompatible with FF6. I upgraded anyway and find that Java does work, but the Java Console 6.0.26 is disabled. Did FF change something on how it handles Java? Can I just flat out remove the console now?

I love when people complain about version numbers. No one ever complained about Google Chrome when it went from 4.0 to 8.0 in one calendar year.

I just find it silly that they are changing the number so much. It's stupid really.

Traditionally when you go from 1.x to 2.x it means you rewrote the entire thing. Maybe not from scratch, but did some very big overhaul. Now they change a spelling mistake in the help file or some other small change nobody notices and release as a new major version. wtf? I've stopped upgrading. Once it's been a few months since my last upgrade, then I'll upgrade. They are becoming almost as bad as adobe.

Same issue as above, Java console is said to be incompatable.I wonder, do we really need the Java Console as I did a version check and Java says it has the latest one installed. But I can't find a way to remove Java Console 6.0.2.4 or Java Console 6.0.2.6 .. .24 is disabled and I told Add On Compatability reportert 6.0.2.6 still works.

I am glad to see that someone is updating their software faster then microsoft can keep up.

Maybe, just maybe, having to wait years for an update is a thing of the past.

Internet explorer 6 was released in 2001. Its taken microsoft 10 years to release 4 browsers. Those long development times should be a thing of the past.

Doesn't hurt that chrome seems to be packaged with alot of programs. I don't know how many programs i have downloaded and installed without them asking me if i want to install chrome.

At this point I don't think FF6 needs a Java console at all. I've been using FF6 since yesterday afternoon and haven't hit any issues with java at all.

If you want to remove Console 6.0.24 you can delete it manually. Depends on where you Program Files for Mozilla are. For me it is:

C: \Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions

The folder would be a bunch of letters, for example my 6.0.26 folder is named: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0026-ABCDEFFEDCBA}

Just find the one with 0024 on it, and delete the entire folder. Restart FF and that should remove the add-on from your list.

yeah, but it's not like you even know what number google chrome is on except for in its about page.

it looks the same today as the day it was released. everything that has changed has been under the hood, largely transparent to the user.
