Firefox 3.6 starts lagging after a while

Anyone else have this problem? Didn't see it in FF 3.5.

What happens is that after a while, my inputs start to lag. e.g. if I click on a link, it only registers after a noticeable delay, some delay in typing (just happened right now), stuttering in videos, etc. I changed the auto-tab save feature from 10 seconds to 5 minutes (about:config browser.sessionstore.interval) and this still happens. No addons currently running.

Any ideas, or is anyone else experiencing this?

Any chance you're running Kaspersky 2010? Both FF and IE8 would randomly get bogged down and take several seconds to respond - very similar to what you're describing. Turned out Kaspersky was the culprit. Now it's gone and I haven't seen the problem since.

Now, that doesn't explain why you're seeing it in FF 3.6 and not 3.5, but that's the only specific thing that jumps to mind.

Have you tried completely uninstalling and installing it?

Thanks for the reply. Not using Kaspersky, using MES.

Haven't tried uninstalling/reinstalling yet but I guess I'm going to have to try that. Maybe I'll just use this as an excuse to go to Chrome.

I know exactly what your talking about but haven't had this problem in a few weeks now ever sense I fixed it. Can't live without firefox so I had to find some way. Been all over the internet for months to find it. Works pretty well. If I could stick with Opera though I would. Sadly I can't.

How did you fix it?

I'm experiencing this problem as well. I'll have one or two FF windows opened with about 20-25 tabs. Everything runs fine for the first couple of hours and then all of a sudden there's lag. I know it can't be of hardware limitation because I'm using an E8400 with 4GB of RAM. It's crazy because it never happened before. Now I find myself restarting my computer every couple of hours.

I've been having major issues on my machines as well. If it continues, I'll have to try another browser. In fact, it's cropping up now. Keystrokes appear after a few seconds at random moments. It's absolutely disgusting! Is it possible to go back to a previous version of FF? Do they have them available for download? This I do not need.

Edit: You can get Firefox 3.5.7 English (US) here:

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-3.5.7&os=win&lang=en-US

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-3.5.7&os=win&lang=en-US

Hopefully I can restore my open windows, settings, add-ons, etc. I think I'll export what I can before attempting to revert.

Ooops! Looking now I see that I'm actually running 3.5.6. Damn. I think I'll have to start using IE. Suggestions for other browser(s) welcome!

I posted in another thread but I've switched to Chrome. So far so good. Gestures need a bit of work but it's so quick overall that I think I'm going to stick with it.

Mouse gestures? I haven't tried that feature yet. Can you import your FF bookmarks into Chrome, and etc.?

There's a lot to be said for quick. Maybe FF is just too big and bloated at this point.

Importing everything into Chrome was seamless, including saved username/passwords. I was pleasantly surprised. I also like how you can do different searches in the address bar... e.g. the default is Google, but if i precede my searches with the letter "w", it searches Wikipedia, "a", it searches amazon, etc (I set it up this way, it's not default behavior).

Thank you. Assuming my FF woes continue (Why doubt it?) I'll move to Chrome, probably this week! :awe:

I would move to Chrome except that there is a problem with Chrome and Ultramon. There is no button in the top right corner to move Chrome from window to window. I'm using a dual monitor setup and soon a triple LCD setup. Without something like, ultramon, it's a pain in the ass to use a multi-LCD setup.

I have used Chrome before and I like it. It can and will probably replace FF in the long term. Google is spending a lot of resources and time to make Chrome the best browser on the web. You can always move your bookmarks to Chrome from FF with Xmarks. I haven't tried it before, but I don't think there should be any potential problems down the line.

Why do I have this strange odd and gut feeling that this thread's point is to try and get as many people as possible to switch to chrome. Like me and anyone else.

The only way I ever see that happening is if all firefox addons work in Chrome. That is just never going to be though. I would bet my life one that.

The OP brought up a legitimate issue though. I'm experiencing it myself!

See there is a problem with that. This has always been a issue with firefox. Why wait until now to bring it up. Like I said Chrome will never have all of firefox addons. Yes it has more than they did but I can never see it having the exact same addons as firefox like greasemonkey for example. Yes I know there is already a version out there for chrome but it does not work. People online report this and my friends who use Chrome instead has as well so no I don't just believe what everyone online says. Still there is plenty of other addons and greasemonkey scripts that will never work on chrome. Even Opera has this problem. Though luckily some scripts do work. Just depends on which ones your trying to get to work. Chrome is not any faster than firefox either. Even if it was there is still the addon problem.

Oh and one fix to everyone having this problem is this.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=29242367&postcount=12

Was from this firefox thread http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2043637 where you can see I had this problem before as well. I refuse to accept that as a fix though so I went ahead and took matters into my own hands. Dedicated myself to finding a real fix for firefox sense that is what most people say anyway when you complain. They don't want to help thats fine but I knew once I found the real fix I would leave them out in the cold. So when they finally notice this problem they will be just as lost. Then it is good luck to them.

So you have a "real fix" but aren't going to share because someone pissed you off from a previous thread? Why even bother posting here then?

Firefox has this feature as well.
