This looks like a solid release. The "copy link to highlight" looks like a handy feature.

Copy Link to Highlight allows users to share arbitrary sections of a page with others by copying a link through the context menu with a given selection

Here is an example where I link to and highlight "5) Spamming will not be permitted." in the AnandTech Forum Guidelines.

I wasn't impressed. The link it generates just loads the same wikipedia page exactly as you would normally get. It does have the text I selected with a tinted background. To me, that's NOT a big deal 🙂

But at least it is harmless, and will likely go completely unnoticed. It's just something for Mozilla to crow about 🙂

That's OK with me. I'm still happy using Firefox, even with all their dumb eye candy. But it would be nice if they stopped all the crowing and concentrated on the browser.

I think that can be useful to show the relevant phrase within the context it was given. More useful in space constrained formats like mastodon, but could be useful for forums also, when you don't want to post a wall of text.

It's not an amazing game changer, but it's a nice useful enhancement.

Not, for me; ALL the original web page is still there. The ONLY difference is that the selected phrase has a tinted background. So, I'm still getting the entire "wall of text" 🙂

Maybe I did something wrong, or just don't know how to use it.

Here is the link "copy to Highlight" generated:

I'm not seeing anything but the first bit of the page. The stuff I selected was near the bottom of the page, in fact it was my own words saying I would do this test.

I didn't expect it to be so badly botched! So clearly something is wrong with my computer, it's configuration, or again, maybe I don't know how to use it.

In conclusion, it appears the new "copy to highlight" Works on some web pages, and doesn't work on some web pages. So when you use it, you cannot be sure whether it worked unless you check it. That's not good enough for me to use it.

I highlighted "Initially available only in English" and it worked for me. Here is what my link looks like.

Code:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia#:~:text=Initially%20available%20only%20in%20English%2C

Thanks. When I copy and paste your link into the address bar of a new blank tab, It yields the ENTIRE web page. It does have the selected text highlighted, but everything else is also there, right down to the long list of footnotes at the bottom of the wiki page.

So obviously there must be something weird about my computer. I tried with 4 browsers: Seamonkey, chrome, firefox and edge.

I guess this new feature just won't work for me, but I'm glad to know about it. Thanks again.

I also see the entire wiki web page. The only difference is the highlighted text. It's not a groundbreaking feature. If I post a link it would be handy to highlight important points. Also, if I highlight an area in the middle of a large web page the link will scroll down to the highlighted area.

Thanks. That clears up the mystery!

I don't see any use for it, but happy it fills other's needs. To me, It's just more mozilla crowing about their latest new bling. 🙂
