This is most likely really obvious, but I can't get it to let me install a plugin from Google.

1.5 final

No matter what I do it pops up the thing at the top that says something like 'software installation disabled' etc.

you have to either download the xpi to your system and then drag it into Ff to install or you have to allow google (in FF settings) to install software on FF. Tools ->Options - Web Features (i think that's where it is on 1.5. Look for "Allow websites to install software" checkbox and then add google)

This is one of the problems I had too. Here is what to check:

1. Type [ about:config ] into your Firefox address bar.
2. Navigate to the "xpinstall.enabled" entry. It is toward the bottom of the page.
3. Right-click the "Value" section and select "Toggle" to change value to "true".

That should take care of the plug-in install problem for most. The other problem I had was playing media files with Firefox 1.5. That problem had to do with the Adblock plug-in. If you have Adblock, open "Preferences" in Adblock. Now click "Adblock Options" and un-check the box for "Obj-Tabs" from that page.
