Firefly VS Serenity

Ok, maybe an abomination is a bit far, but I was really aggrivated by it.

I just watched all of the aired Firefly episodes, in order. I thought they were great. The greatest part about the show were the characters, it is what you would call character driven.

Then I watch the film, it is like Firefly through the Twilight Zone. Almost none of the characters match their personalities in the television show.

Highlights of this:

The dialogue was horrid overall.

Malcolm - he is completely cold hearted, he is not as witty as before and his overall attitude has changed.

Simon - he was never so belligerent, him and Malcolm were never at each others' throats, etc.

Jane - his attitude was completely different, what made him likeable, his naievete and lack of leadership etc, were gone. He would have never given the captain the attitude that he 'could be a better captain' etc.

And that it just the start of it. I could go on for the length of the movie, but I tried to ignore these horrid differences and just enjoy it, but it was REALLY HARD.

Other points about the movie that are just my opinion.

Kaylee actually looks a lot cuter with the added weight. I saw on the dvd bonus info that she had to gain 20 lbs to play the role. I am never the one to like girls with extra weight vs the same girl skinnier, but somehow, this was the case. It may have been related to me just not liking this movie overall though.

And as for River, I think that her overall acting wasn't as colorful or as good as in the show, but not as much as the others. What I would really like to mention, however, is that the cinema was a good place for her to come out and tell/show her story. The fights did seem hugely like Resident Evil crossed with The Matrix though...

Anyhow, that's how I feel. Anyone agree?
 
Serenity > Firefly


I started a point by point rebuttal and then realized that you're so off on every point that it would be wasted time on my part.
 
The movie came after the series and was darker, mostly because it showed the group when they were more broken down and people had left. Both were well done, just one was made more for the mainstream audience. The director had to speed up the storyline and that meant forcing the characters project certain things more quickly to speed up the storyline.
 
I enjoyed both. I thought the movie was fun, and entertaining, for both Firefly fans and people unfamiliar with the show.
 
I'm a huge fan of both the show and the movie and could go on for a long time about why the movie is how it is (darker, etc.) compared to the show, but I'll just say that they're both excellent in their own right.

I can understand what your reasoning would be, but this would only change people to an extent. It seemed in the film as if they were different people playing the characters. I would have almost liked that better...

I think part of it is the creative license Joss was given by Universal versus that which Fox gave him. I didn't watch the show when it was on air and have only been a fan for the past few months (after the movie came out, I watched the series and then the movie), but my understanding is that Fox wanted Mal, for example, to be colder - like in the movie - but Fox wanted him to be funnier, etc. etc. From what I've read and heard, Universal gave Joss a lot more freedom to do what he wanted (not to mention a bigger budget, hehe) to do originally with Firefly.

Either way, I'm still a huge fan of both and like them both for their own reasons.
 
The characters in Serenity are closer to what they were at the beginning of Firefly. The characters all grew throughout the series and are different people by the end. This is what makes Firefly so awesome.

The fact that we care so much about the characters and the disappointments in Serenity is just a testament to the greatness of the show.

I think this is quite the opposite from the short bit that I saw from the DVD. The creator is more into the character development, but fox was looking for more of an action packet hollywood-esque setup. This is why the first episode was not aired first and why the train robbery episode was created, to appease fox. I'm really suprised to see that he is credited with writing for the movie. The dialogue doesn't seem like it was written by the same person at all. He must have went another direction, or maybe his heart wasn't in it for the movie, knowing that the series would be no more by that point.
