Read about it here. Firefly at Amazon Plus, if you like they have 1846 customer reviews.

meh thats the regular price basically. and take web reviews with a grain of salt. the fan base of the firefly series is the most fanatical i've ever seen. they've flooded the internet with fawning reviews and voted down the negative ones on every site they possibly could. for instance during the weeks of the serenity release they voted firefly serenity into the top 10 of all time on yahoo movies. talk about absurd right? same thing goes with amazon.com and others. they flood out any rational review. its really just a small cult show that isn't very good. all the web hype and sneak previews months before the films release, and the dvd series being out for years to build excitement and fanatic crowd turnout couldnt get the movie opening weekend past 10million:p wheres the beef eh?

i rented the series on dvd to see what the hype was about, and it was rather dissapointing. the show is tacky and lame to the core, its a very poorly thought out universe. they take the cowboy thing too far, they literally carbon copy the cowboy frontier thing on many planets. all the characters are one dimensional politically correct cliches and frankly the rather poor scripts confuse witty remarks with actual content. predictable cheesy plots blah blah.. i'm sure many were underwhelmed like me, and the thats why the dvd release and all the hype lead to the lousy movie opening. sometimes a tv series is canceled for good reason.

i suggest you rent it first.

battlestar gallactica is better;)

i guess you could say its like cowboy bebop in certain ways, but without the style. bebop atleast had a well fleshed out and semi plausible universe.

I wouldn't say BSG is better than Firefly. Comparing the two is apples and oranges. I liked FireFly because it's story is very casual, but still have some substance to it. It has ALOT less "today's issue" that it attempts to discuss, unlike BSG of late.

Edit: If I would compare Firefly, it's something close to Cowboy Bebop in nature. It has comedy, it's simplistic in its story (but still has certain degree of depth to it), and it's just "fun" to watch. You don't need to analyze it nor delve really down into the story to enjoy it.

Firefly is more about the relationships between the characters than a pure SF show. It is often very funny, and sometimes brutal, but it is not a "we are in space exploring the unknown for the greater good of mankind" kinda show. It would be akin to a series about Han Solo and Chewbacca taking on passengers sometime before meeting Luke and Leia and running smuggling operations with them on the ship, minus the aliens and in a single solar system with a lot of moons. I enjoy it and find it amusing.

I'd have to agree with razor2025 and say that the closest show to Firefly is Cowboy Bebop but that won't be a useful comparison to most people. Definitely check out the show and give it at least 2-3 episodes. Yes, it is a bit cheesy, but the show is definitely worth getting past the cheese (or enjoying it) IMO.

I also prefer Battlestar Galactica but I don't see the need to dislike any non-BSG (or non-Star Wars, non-Star Trek, non-Stargate, non-Farscape, etc) series...

Firefly was good. Shame it was so short-lived. I only got to see a couple of the 19 or so episodes. Serenity was great. It's like the Ender's Game series of books. Don't need to dig deep to enjoy it and have a good understanding of it, and it's not a bad idea for a story. Personally it reminds me of games like Freelancer and Escape Velocity, for those of you who have played them. Anyway, that's my two cents.

I just love in the firefly series one scene when the captain was questioning some bad-dude prisoners...

....first one refused to talk, so he shoved him into the running engine......poooff...he's shredded/burned.

Grabs the next bad-guy and says something like, "so...you wanna tell me?" of course the bad-guy is more than co-operative..... :D

"I will hunt you down to the ends of the earth to the day i die!" *CRUNCH*

its good scifi. Like star wars was before it started getting controlled by lucas. IE simple plots, easy to understand. but great chemistry

One of the best series' I've seen in a LONG time. Highly underrated. Anyone who watches the whole series wants more more more, and its really too bad that Serenity wasn't the hit it should've been in the theaters. This universe could really take off in a lot of directions.

If you like SciFi then you *should* like Firefly, and I'll be the first to shoot down a scifi series. SG-1=great 1st 5 years, good the rest. SG-A=good. BSG=great. Firefly=great. Farscape=ok. Andromeda=not so good. Earth Final Conflict=good 1st season, sucky the rest. Sliders? oh please...

I saw Serenity. Very good movie. And it does kinda remind you of Freelancer and Escape Velocity (loved both of them). I still can't find my copy of Freelancer though... How does it remind you of the Ender series? Those are quite deep if you want to go indepth.

Firefly is by the director that did the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series on TV. If you like the witty writing from that series, you'll like the way the characters interact in this one. Lots of good one-liners. Great character development over the course of the series.

I like the Firefly universe... it's a huge melting pot of cowboy/frontier stuff with a bunch of other cultures or time periods mixed in depending on the planet they are visiting. Huge asian influence, presumably becuase of the sheer numbers of Chinese that ultimately made it out into the galaxy. The characters swear in chinese, and have their own slang too. Most of the planets they visit are "frontier" planets that are old western, but there are also some that are very technologically advanced (like blade runner type planets), and others that have a Victorian way of life (with technology hidden behind the scenes). This mix of the old and new makes it interesting and fun.

I've watched Firefly since it was on TV the first time, but I've had a lot of friends who haven't come up to me and tell me how much they liked the Serenity movie. I'll point them this way to get caught up!

The usual reaction I get when I lend my Firefly DVD set to somebody is.

"I like it, I watched the first 5 episodes last night."
"But you get off work at 7pm and came into work this morning. 5 episodes is like 4 hours?!"
"Yeah, I really like it."

There are a few people who don't like it however. That's just how it is. Hey, some people juggle geese.
