Firefly question

I just bought the series a few days ago, it ROCKS! But I have a question, what language is it they are speaking? At first I thought it was made up but the more episodes I watched the more I thought it sounded like Chinese... Which is it?

Well I assume they have never spoken it before, I would probably screw it up as well. So do they ever say why its in the series? (Don't tell me it its a spoiler)

Because the two cultures that dominated Earth at the time everyone moved to the new galaxy was America and China.
