Firefight scene from the movie, The Rock (with Nicolas Cage)

Saw the movie a few times before but wanted to see it once more on my hdtv. For all that has seen this movie I'm sure you'll agree that the firefight in shower room was pretty intense.

If you were the commander of the unit and was ambushed from an elevated position and you have little to no cover, would you stand down and possibly save the lives of your men or tell them to hold their ground and possibly get them all killed?

I'd fight to the finish. If I can take a few of them out trying to save my country, so be it. Small price to pay for the personal gratitude I would get. Even if I do feel entrusted with the lives of those under my command. They were an elite unit, they knew the risk, they were willing to give up their lives to try to save their town.

Could you ever live it down realizing that you may have had a chance, but left it there? That you were given a task and you didn't fulfill it?

Watched saving private ryan the other night and there was a quote that had to do with losing your men, and realizing how many people you saved from losing one man. Or something like that. I can't remember.

i like when Ed Harris' voice cracks in that scene:

"Stand down, capn'....I said STAND DOWN CAPN!!"

I thought getting his men killed was teh wrong choice. it gained him nothing. where in a situation where they are hostages or prisoners they still have a chance. A life prisoner is far more useful then a dead one.

There's a difference between bravery and putting up a fight, and straight up suicide. Just like Ed Harris says in the movie, they were surrounded from an elevated position. There was pretty much nothing they could do. If the SEALs had intentionally fired first, they might have taken a few with them, but tactically, they were ******.

Agent Paxton: This is not happening.
Commander Anderson: Sir, we know why you're out here. God knows, I agree with you. But like you, I swore to defend this country against all enemies, foreign sir, and domestic. General we've spilled the same blood in the same mud. And you know god damn well I can't give that order.
Navy SEAL: We're dead!
General Hummel: Your unit is covered from an elevated position, Commander. I'm not gonna ask you again. Don't do anything stupid. No-one has to die here.
Commander Anderson: [raising his voice] The men following the General: you're under oath as United States Marines, have you forgotten that? We all have shipmates we remember, some of them were sh*t on and pissed on by the Pentagon. But that doesn't give you the right to mutiny!
General Hummel: You call 'em what you want! You're down there, we're up here! You walked into the wrong goddamn room, Commander!

He should have stood down. It is possible that they could have fought later or planned another option. But trying to get into a firefight in that position was suicide. There is nothing honorable in that.

good movie, awesome scene. i'd definitely have the men surrender as getting them all killed accomplished nothing.
