i'd of have sent mail to my group and get approval...just to cover my arse!

I work with live web servers, so it's kind of a time-sensitive thing. I sent an IM to the one Unix tech support guy who was on-duty, but after 30 minutes of no response, I went in a did it myself.

what really screwed me over was that I forgot to read the client's standard action plan before restarting the service.

Escalation processes exist for a couple of reasons: 1. They scale, and 2. They give you the ability to CYA.

Remember: The "political" aspect of your job is AT LEAST as important as the technical aspect. Appearances matter.

I agree. I just interviwed a kid yesterday who got fired from his last job because he changed permissions on some fiancial files and he was the sys admin. Im very seriously considering recomending to my boss that we hire him. he was honest and definatly learned but he doesnt have to worry about that here, we are the sys admin and we are GODS and WILL have access to everything on our network.

I did that a while ago. One of the Higher up HR people needed to have their laptop reimaged. Normally we pop in a spare drive, image that, then transfer their files over from their actual drive. Problem was I forgot to put the spare drive in before I did the reimage and I wiped out everything.

We were able to get a lot back via a data restore company...

But nothing bad happened because we blamed it on the SMS update pushes we get because our SMS team has no idea what the hell they are doing and they crash systems all the time.

how much did that restore cost you?

what does probation mean for you, no TV?

probation = if I screw up again, I'll be fired

Congrats on making it through this situation. I'm sure now, you'll find lots of ways to make yourself more productive and showing your true value in your work environment. You need to build up some "good points" to erase those bad points that are in your file.
