Firebird now has an installer...

In preparation for a future .8 release (still a little ways off), Firebird now has an installer. It's not perfect yet, but it looks like it will eventually come packaged with a number of extensions, which you can choose to install or not. Of course, the .zip version will still be available as always for those who simply prefer that method. :)

Note: This is a nightly build, which may be a bit more buggy than the normal releases. Just a warning.

Firebird is slow and buggy? it's fast as hell on my system, ok so it takes 1/4th a second longer to load then IE. but it actually is much more responsive afterwards.

XPLITE is the best program, I erridicated XP of IE for good, and I hope to never have to look back.

Do you really need to kill MSIE? It doesn't take that much room and it still comes in handy on the occassional site that doesn't work well with Firebird. For example, I couldn't seem to download Quicktime from the Apple site with Firebird so I tried IE and it worked.

you can download the security updates without using windows update. It's not as convenient, but you can do it.

ha ..

if firebird is slow ... then your computer is slow.
if firebird is buggy ... then IE is buggy as hell.

firebird is the next savior. You wait and watch. I bet the ranch that IE7 is gonna try and steal Firebird's thunder. It's gonna mimick about every aspect of firebird.

They official one is going to be a bit more thorough, as it will include extensions withit that you can install, settings you can establish, etc.

Unfortunately, this is a nightly build, which means that it does not work perfectly enoughto be an official release. As a result, these are sometimes a bit more buggy than the normal builds.

I love Firebird, but I wouldn't say it's the next savior...

Firebird has always been pretty fast for me, but Mozilla is more compatible with a lot of webpages I go to and pretty much just as fast.

No, if you go to windowsupdate, then add "?corporate=true" to the URL, you get a list of updates and can download them.

No. Official releases are done at set times - it doesn't really have to do with bugs (unless there is something severe). Nightlies will generally have FIXED the bugs from previous releases, but the deal is, they may have added new severe ones. Nightlies are the "latest and greatest" - they just don't go through any quality checks. If someone checks in bad code (look here - if there is red, that means the code was so bad it doesn't compile, if there is orange it compiles but the browser doesn't work), then the nightly will contain bad code... and you'll get a browser with bugs. Of course, the vast majority of the nightlies work great. If you get a really new one, there was recently support for opacity stuff added, and notification (a sound) when a download finishes, among other things.

edit: the sound on download finish is only in mozilla though. it was added by yours truly ;)

I agree that the nightlies are often better. In fact, I use them myself. The problem is, though, that the occasional nightly has serious bugs and the Mozilla people make sure those bugs are not there in the releases. I just figured that I would warn people that such fatal bugs may exist in a nightly, so they're not caught off guard, and that if they don't want to risk it, they should probably stick to the releases.

I don't disagree. Back up important stuff like bookmarks if you value data ;). (I've personally never had any trouble... but you never know ;))

Firebird is the most wonderful piece of software on my entire computer. I love it so much that it's hard to use a non-firebird browser on any other computer. Especially IE... Ugh... I shudder at the thought of "Open In New Window"

I think Firebird is superior, but I don't get why people go to the trouble of removing IE. I still use it on the occasional times I need windowsupdate or some weird website that doesnt like firebird.

I don't,The first time I ran it, it caused my windows to crash and I ended up having to deltree and reinstall XP clean. I know that is a 1 in probably 10 million thing that happened to me. But it left a VERY sour, bad taste my in mouth. If something like Blaster comes along, then I manually patch it. Besides that I just rely on Avast & ZoneAlarm to keep my safe. And I removed IE & Outlook from my system so the majority of backdoors should be out the window for me. I spent months modding my system. to not patch MS's problems, but find existing software to replace what MS couldn't get right. Now I got AstonShell + Powerdesk + Firebird and I'm loving it!

If you're not installing all security updates, then you're still vunerable. And if you don't use MS software (including their desktop) and are so willing to spend lots of time messing with stuff, why don't you just use linux?
